13 bodies recovered from collapsed pit, many more remain

So far 13 bodies have been recovered from last Sunday’s disaster at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region where a mining pit collapsed on some small-scale miners, popularly known as galamsey operators.
Tens of others who are feared dead still remain in the pit five days after the tragedy as rescuers battle muddy waters to recover them.
There were more than 140 small-scale miners including women and children in the pit when it collapsed on Sunday, according to accounts by some survivors. Even though survivors put the number of the trapped at 80 plus, the pit owner, who is currently assisting police in their investigations, says the number would not be more than 20.
Joy FM’s correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah, who has been monitoring the rescue effort from Thursday morning, reports that as at 6pm only 13 bodies had been retrieved. Rescuers are convinced more victims have been covered by the mud as they try to pump out the remaining water.
He narrated the chilling atmosphere around the area where faces can only beam with extreme sadness and grief.
Owusu Peprah said the people have been “showing all manner of emotions,” describing some as depressing, traumatic and a sense of dejection.
He said out of the 13 retrieved bodies, only one has been identified by the family, as the deformed condition of the remaining makes it difficult for them to be easily identified.
“Those who have been recovered from the pit have not been identified yet because their bodies were swollen, they are discoloured, and their faces are deformed.”
A man, who claimed he came from the Sefwi area in the Western Region, whose brother is believed to be among those that are yet to be recovered, sorrowfully narrated how he was able to escape by the skin of the teeth.
The carpenter-turned-miner said he saw the embankment of the mine collapsing with water rushing into the pit. Even though he alerted his brother, a Junior High School pupil, the minor failed in his attempt to escape the rushing water.
The man, who appeared with bruises and plasters over his body, as a result of his struggle to safety, said he came to the mining area with the brother without the knowledge of their parents and wondered how to narrate the calamity to them back home.
Rescuers early reported how the mass of bodies were mangled in a weird frenzy as the miners struggled in vain to escape. Some had their heads in others limbs while others had their limbs in others' mouths.
Kwaku Owusu Preprah said bodies that would be retrieved would be deposited in a nearby dugout for traditional rituals and purification. Relatives would then be allowed to give a befitting burial to identified bodies.
